TETRA – Expanding the Possibilities

TETRA, (terrestrial trunked radio), is a mobile radio standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and is widely used around the world.

The TETRA standard was developed to meet the needs of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) user organisations including the military, government, transportation and public safety organisations.

TETRA combines the ruggedness, security and reliability of digital two-way radio communications with features such as telephony, messaging, packet data and GPS tracking.

TETRA data capabilities include:

Status messaging, used in applications such as event notification or vehicle alarms
Short data, useful for transmitting small data packets (e.g. location updates or text messages)
Packet data, for larger data files or remote telemetry services

There are a range of devices available today that allow users to take advantage of TETRA data. These can be used in vehicles, as handheld devices, or as part of a telemetry solution and include:

Packet Data Implementation

Unlike circuit data channel allocation, KorKor™’s packet data service uses IP based transport standards to enable more efficient and cost effective delivery of data. Packet data allows:

Faster data rates compared to other mobile radio networks
Easy system integration with external devices and applications
Cost effective data delivery from mobile and fixed remote locations
Users to see faster response times for their data applications
Implementation of more advanced applications

Multi-Slot Packet Data (MSPD)

MSPD offers the biggest potential increase in TETRA data throughput available today. It provides enhanced data services with up to four times more data bandwidth. The result is faster database access, transfers, support for a wider array of applications, and network efficiency.

Looking Ahead with TEDS

As both data needs and data usage increase, data services will evolve. Data applications will emerge that are more advanced and require more information to be transmitted.

For these applications, higher speed data services are likely to be required to ensure information is promptly delivered to the end users.

TETRA Enhanced Data Service (TEDS) is the next evolution on the TETRA roadmap. Network support is expected within the next three years.

For many critical communication users, TEDS will provide the need for higher speed data services. TEDS will enable a rich range of powerful and up-rated services and applications to be delivered to the field and remote workforce.
